Human Sexual Response Cycle

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Sexual experience for both men and women involve five stages namely desire, excitement (arousal), plateau, orgasm and resolution.

Desire
“Feeling of wanting to be sexual”

Excitement
This phase is characterized by following:

  1. Increased heart rate
  2. Penis erection, nipple erection
  3. Increase in blood pressure
  4. Increased blood flow in genital areas
  5. Muscle tension throughout the body
  6. Skin flushing

Plateau
At this stage, changes of excitement phase are more intensified prior to orgasm and further includes following:

  1. Heavy breathing
  2. Further increase in muscle tension
  3. Muscle tension increases.
  4. Men start to secrete seminal fluid
  5. Testicles get closer to the body.

Orgasm
This is the climax of sexual activity. It is quite brief and goes on only for few seconds and characterized by peak of sexual response cycle. It includes following:

  1. Vaginal and uterine interactions in women
  2. Sex Flush
  3. Contractions of muscles at the base of penis resulting in semen ejaculation
  4. Extreme sexual sensations

Resolution
This is the last phase of sexual response cycle and brings out a feeling of wellness followed by orgasm. During this phase, men lose their erections and women’s genitals return to their normal state. This happens as muscles tend to relax and blood pressure drops. Body returns to its normal level of functioning.

Understanding these phases may help partners better understand one another’s bodies and responses, leading to enhanced sexual experiences.

Women and Weight Gain

Friday, January 15th, 2010

There are certain phases in a woman’s life that make her prone to weight gain. For instance, women tend to gain weight during adolescence, pregnancy and post menopausal period. While it may be easier for women to lose weight during early years, it is extremely tough to shed extra pounds off the body during later period of life. And, even if a woman tries to maintain her weight, she’ll find that her fat is distributed in a different pattern as it is now more concentrated on the waistline.

It has been observed that a large number of women gain weight post marriage. This could be because of changed eating habits with a shift towards eating rich food or a more carefree and comfortable life post marriage. Some people also assume that weight gain is a sign of good health and happiness and therefore make no efforts towards reducing weight.

Pregnant women are highly prone to weight gain. This is because most women harbour a misconception that they should eat for 2 when they are pregnant and relax more to preserve their energy for the time of labour. However, experts believe that women should become more sensible towards eating during pregnancy and go for mild exercises, this facilitates a comfortable delivery and prevent excess weight gain. Women who take contraceptives, steroid hormones, diabetes drugs, some antidepressants, and blood pressure drugs can also lead to weight gain. The use of these drugs as well as obesity in women is on a rise.

Most women tend to gain weight during menopause – the natural phase in a woman’s life. Studies show that on average, women may experience a gain of approximately 10-15 pounds in the years surrounding menopause. There are several factors responsible for this occurrence such as hormonal changes, a decrease in thyroid function and subsequently metabolism. Because of a lower metabolism, fewer calories are required to maintain your current weight however, by habit women tend to eat the same amount hence they gain weight. Besides, women tend to be more inactive as they age and weight gain becomes the norm for the most.

Still going strong

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Despite the doom and gloom of the recession people still want to be looking healthy, happy and young. So plastic surgery still is a lucrative business and if we know anything about human beings it will remain so in the years to come. So let us talk today about the most popular aesthetic medicine procedures.

Most los angeles plastic surgeons know that breast-augmentation is remaining one of the most sought after plastic operations on the market. It’s an operation performed to alter the shape and size of a woman’s breast. There are following goals of operations: to enlarge the breasts, to correct the shape of the breast after pregnancy and breastfeeding, to make even the size of both breasts and some others. As you can see, breast-augmentation answers many topical issues for women, which keeps it at the top of the list of popularity.

At the same time, the popularity of non-surgical procedures like Botox is constantly sharply rising. More and more doctors are signing up for botox training courses as a way to diversify their career and plump up their bank accounts. Botox is the procedure that’s been fastest to grow in popularity not only because it delivers great results but because it is done fast and requires no recovery time, and is relatively affordable. Chances are despite the economic hardships the beauty industry together with aesthetic surgery will still remain winners.

Dermalogica Treatments

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

A few years ago i was given some free spa style treatments as a birthday present. I enjoyed a number of Dermalogica treatments and I have been buying products from the Dermalogica range ever since.

The Dermalogica range as something available to suit all skin types, using natural ingredients blended with latest technologies and research to promote healthy skin. None of the Dermalogica range use pore-cloggingmineral oil or lanolin instead using the finest natural ingredients, they also contain no aftificial frangrances or colours. I am also very pleased to know there is no drying alcohol and the range is not tested on animals.

As you would expect from a range of professional skin care products, Dermalogica is far from cheap, although that said, they still offer incredible value for money when you balance price against quality. It’s not likely you will find Dermalogica products in your local chemist as only specialist salons with treatment facilities are approved by Dermalogica as stockists. It’s advisable to visit a trained Dermalogica therapists for a consultation, they will then be able to give you advice on which products of the range to use.

As previously mentioned the range his huge and ever expanding, Dermalogica have been quick to realise that its not just women that use skin care products and as such they have released Dermalogica Shave products.

Vitamin C and Vitamin E – Common Antioxidants

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Antioxidants are the substances that help protect the cells of the human body against free oxygen radicals. Free radicals (OH hydroxyl radicals) are substances generated by the normal metabolism. Free radicals are atoms or group of atoms that can destroy cells and play a role in many diseases. Antioxidants are a group of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that help protect the body from forming free radicals. Most common antioxidant vitamins include vitamin C and Vitamin E.

Vitamin C as Antioxidant
Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant. As our body can not make it on its own, it has to be supplied through diet.

Vitamin C can protect indispensable molecules in the body, such as proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) from damage by free radical. Vitamin C may also be able to generate other oxidants such as Vitamin E. It works along with vitamin E to stop free radical chain reactions.

The daily recommended dose of vitamin C varies general state of health but for a normal man or women, it should be 60mg.Few sources of Vitamin C are grapefruit, orange, strawberries, amla, broccoli, potato etc.

Vitamin E as Antioxidant
Vitamin E is a fat soluble antioxidant and comprised of 8 different antioxidants. Each form has its own biological activity, the measure of potency or functional use in the body. The most active form of Vitamin E in humans is Alpha-tocophero. Vitamin E protects the proteins, blood cells, nervous system, retina and muscles.

The daily recommended dose of vitamin C varies directly with age, sex and general state of health:

  1. 4 mg for infants between 0 to 6 months of age
  2. 5mg for infants between 7 to 12 months of age
  3. 6 mg for children between one to three years of age
  4. 7mg for children between four to ten years of age
  5. 11 mg for those aged between 9-18 years of age
  6. 15mg for adults

Best sources of vitamin E include fats and vegetable oils, green leafy vegetables, corn, cereals, olives.

Diabetes

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Diabetes is a condition or disease where body is not able to process or use insulin. Insulin is a human hormone produced by pancreas required to process glucose (sugar) in the blood properly. Diabetes can be categorized as a life-long disease in which blood sugar reaches to higher level above normal due to too little insulin, resistance to insulin, or both.

Types of Diabetes

What is Type 1 diabetes?
Also known insulin dependent diabetes, it often occurs below the age of 40 years. In this type of condition, body is unable to produce any insulin. Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin injections and diet.

What is Type 2 diabetes?
Also known as Non Insulin dependent diabetes, Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body is able to produce some insulin, but

  1. Not enough for it to function properly.
  2. Body cells become insulin resistance, that is, do not use insulin properly.

It is more common than type 1 diabetes, especially over the age of 40. It is often associated with obese and overweight people.

Concentrated Sugars

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Concentrated sugars intake gives us pleasure, it is like a reward after a hard day’s work. So how can it be bad then? For this to make sense we need to understand the phases of digestion:

  • The first phase is the cephalic one. It should normally begin half an hour before beginning to eat. The brain receives messages of a future meal in the next 30 minutes. These signals can be the smell of food, the thought of eating or the sight of food. The brain interprets these signals and passes them on to the salivary glands to prepare and ease the digestion.
  • The second phase is the buccal digestion, when the meal has already begun and the food is being chewed to pieces in the mouth, mixed with saliva and then swallowed. This usually takes about 10 seconds.
  • The stomach is next in line in this chain of events and mechanically mixes the entire meal with chlorhydric acid creating an homogeneous paste. After about 3 hours, depending on the type of food comes,
  • The intestinal absorption which takes place in the small intestine. This is the place where nutrients, be it sugars, fat, proteins or vitamins, are transported into the bloodstream and from there to the liver for processing.

The important points in concentrated sugars intake are skipping meals, irregular food intake, no cephalic phase and rapid absorption. This causes a steep rise of insulin levels which has a strong lipogenic effect: sugar will become fat and it will accumulate; the message the brain receives when you eat concentrated sugars is the following: my body is starving, I haven’t eaten in 6 hours, this is bad…. Ooh, here’s some sugar, lets put this in storage for later use, who knows when I will get food again.

This shows 2 important things: it is important to have regular meals and to avoid concentrated sugars when trying a weight loss program.
